I’ve been to Red Rock Canyon a hundred of times but I’ve never had a decent photo of it before. It was always a snapshot. Not planned and definitely well prepared. This series of photo I took a couple of weeks ago was, I can say, pretty planned and well prepared. I didn’t just took the shots right away. I took me probably 5 minutes to look around and think what angle would be interesting. After I’ve decided, I set up my gear, composed, and clicked the shutter. Then move on.
It turned out pretty alright I think. But what do you think?
This was taken at the Las Vegas Wetlands Park a couple of weeks ago. I went there because I’ve been wanting to take photos of moving water and do that silk effect. I was kinda surprised that there’s such thing here in Las Vegas since as we all know, this place is a big dessert. It’s a bit far from where I live but it’s weird to know that it’s only 5 minutes away from where I used to live and I’ve never heard of the place until days before going there. Unbelievable.
The place is still a work in progress I believe. There are still some parts or locations there that seems undone. And there’s a part there that the yellow grass were so high that you wouldn’t be found in case you get lost. The place seems pretty dead but I don’t know. Probably it’s meant that way.
Overall, the place is still a nice thing to go to. It’s located at the very east of Tropicana. Have a little jog, breath of fresh air, or just taste the nature.
Canon EOS 7D + Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5
Went to Lake Mead last week with the family. Good times. From now on, I’ll try to post just the best photo/s that I took from a batch. Sorting out could be a bitch. But it can be done.
Quality. Not quantity. As they say.
Canon EOS 7D + Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5 @ 10mm

I’ve been wanting to have an Ultra Wide Angle lens for a long time now since the kit lens that I have (Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-4.5) isn’t wide enough for my taste. It’s still a good lens though and still takes awesome photos. There were a lot of choices when it comes to UWA lens online. But it came down to three.

Of course, the well known Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 is the top among all of the UWA lens out there. People say it takes sharp photos, barely distortions, and it is light weight as well. But I couldn’t justify the price with all of its good stuff since I am just a hobbyist and not making any money out of it. I was so close on hitting the purchase button on it though. There’s the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8. People say good things about that lens as well. Some say the flare is bad and the chromatic abberations are a bit too much. But the range isn’t enough for me. And yes f/2.8 is a good thing, I just don’t think I would be needing it for landscapes since I am mostly shooting at f/8. I have 2 flashes and a tripod for lowlight situations anyway. So I chose the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5.

A couple of reasons why I think the Sigma beat the two other lenses. Against the Canon, the price and the constant f/3.5 aperture. With the Tokina, the range and probably the price as well. 11m for the widest angle isn’t just good enough for me and it’ll probably make me wonder what could’ve been if I was shooting at 10mm. People say it is as bad as a prime but it wasn’t much of an issue for me since I find myself shooting at the widest almost everytime when I am using my Sigma. But here are my thoughts on the Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5.

The wideness is just awesome. You get most of the environment especially when in tight spaces. It is just not ideal for landscapes, but for portraits as well. The lens is not that heavy so it won’t be a problem when you’re walking around shooting stuff. Sharpness is important to me and it’s sharp enough at f/3.5 especially on lower apetures. I shoot some of the photos at f/8 for landscapes and it does the job quite pretty well. Contrast and colors are also popping on this one.
If there’s any grudge that I have with this lens, it’s the softness at the sides and the chromatic abberation. Yes there’s some distortions but I kinda like it. I was thinking of getting a fisheye lens before but I thought it won’t be flexible enough for me. But these things are easily fixed in post processing which I do in every photos. So overall, this lens is just a killer especially for the price. Here are some more shots that I took from this lens with my Canon EOS 7D.

Do you have this lens as well or any ultra wide angle lens? What do you think? Let me know by writing below.
